Recently, Akay Bioactives, a U.S. manufacturer of nutritional ingredients, published a randomized, placebo-controlled study on the effects of its Immufen™ ingredient on mild allergic rhinitis, a complex of turmeric and South African drunken tomato. The results of the study showed that turmeric and South African intoxicant extracts can relieve allergic rhinitis.
Allergic Rhinitis, a health concern for over 400 million people
Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common inflammatory disease of the upper respiratory tract that affects more than 400 million people worldwide, and its prevalence has increased over the past few years. Its characteristics include sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, and itching of the eyes, nose, and palate. It is often comorbid with other conditions such as asthma, conjunctivitis, and sinusitis, which can lead to decreased quality of life, cognitive dysfunction, poor work performance, and poor sleep quality.
The key mechanisms in the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis are the imbalance between type 1 helper T cells (Th1) and type 2 helper T cells (Th2), and the imbalance between innate and adaptive immunity including antigen-presenting cells, lymphocytes and T cells.
Treatment of allergic rhinitis is usually done by means of antihistamines or nasal decongestants, and although antihistamines have been upgraded over several generations, they may still cause a range of adverse effects such as headache, fatigue, drowsiness, pharyngitis, and dizziness. Herbal therapies are now emerging as a safe complementary or alternative medicine to improve and/or manage AR conditions.
Turmeric + South African Drunken Tomatoes Significantly Improve AR
In the study published by Akay Bioactives, 105 participants were randomly assigned to receive turmeric extract with South African drunken tomato extract (CQAB, each CQAB capsule includes 95 ± 5 mg curcumin and 125 mg South African drunken tomato extract), bioavailable curcumin (CGM, each CGM capsule contains 250 mg curcumin), or placebo twice daily for 28 days. By analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), CQAB was found to significantly reduce allergic rhinitis-related symptoms compared to CGM and placebo. Compared with placebo: nasal congestion was reduced by 34.64%, runny nose by 33.01%, itchy nose by 29.77%, sneezing by 32.76%, and Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS) by 31.62%; compared with CGM: nasal congestion was reduced by 31.88%, runny nose by 53.13%, itchy nose by 24.98%, sneezing by 2.93%, and a 25.27% reduction in Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS).
The Ayurvedic monograph Dhanwantari Nighantu mentions turmeric as a defense and treatment for rhinitis. Drunken eggplant is used to treat nasal congestion (to stop coughing and breathing difficulties) and to improve stamina. The combination of these two herbs can have a synergistic pharmacological effect and thus improve allergic rhinitis.Akay Bioactives published research that found that curcumin's ability to modulate the immune system is dependent on its interactions with a variety of immune modulators, such as B cells, T cells, dendritic cells, natural killer cells, neutrophils, and macrophages; and that the active ingredients of South African drunkenness tomato (drunkenness tomato lactone and The active constituents of South African hepatica (hepatica lactone and hepatica lactone glycosides) can exert their immunomodulatory effects by mobilizing and activating macrophages.
People suffering from symptoms of allergic rhinitis tend to have poorer sleep quality, which may lead to reduced learning ability, lower learning/productivity, and thus lower quality of life. While curcumin in turmeric can reduce sleep latency and increase sleep duration in mice; drunkenness lactone in South African drunkenness can relieve stress and improve sleep. Therefore, it can be hypothesized that the synergistic effects of South African intoxicants and curcumin may have conferred the sleep-promoting effects of CQAB.
Additionally, participants in the published study reported increased levels of mood disorders, fatigue, and decreased energy at the beginning of the study. And curcumin significantly improved negative mood. Similarly, South African Drunken Tomato Extract is known to reduce stress and increase energy, thereby improving quality of life and the ability to perform at work. Among other things, South African Drunken Tomatoes may decrease the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In response to stressful stimuli, the HPA axis indirectly contributes to elevated concentrations of cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and low levels of DHEA are the cause of many psychological, physiological and psychosexual problems.
